Nairobi's Art Auction Jumps 56% in a Year: The Numbers From Last Week Are Finally In

Last issue closed with two open questions: what Nairobi's art auction actually raised, and how Lagos Fashion Week actually ended. Both are answered below, alongside two fresh signals on investor appetite for African capital markets, followed by what ZSG is watching next.

Nairobi's Art Auction Jumps 56% in a Year

NAIROBI — The second edition of Art Auction East Africa, held 28 October at Circle Art Gallery, totalled KES 46.3 million, about $356,000, across 68 lots, a 90 percent sell-through rate [1]. Business Daily reports hammer prices alone reached Sh39.4 million, rising to Sh46.3 million once premiums and taxes were included [2]. As flagged in our last issue, that compares to the 2025 debut's roughly $230,000 [3], putting this year's total roughly 56 percent higher.

Edward Saidi Tingatinga's untitled landscape set a new world auction record for the artist at KES 7,631,000, about $58,708 [3]. Kenyan artists led by region, with 22 of 24 lots sold for a combined Sh11.8 million, and Samuel Wanjau's carved wood bird sculpture sold for KES 1,761,000, exceeding its high estimate [1].

A year-two auction growing by more than half, with a genuine world record inside it, is a real result, not a rounding error dressed up as momentum. It is the kind of evidence ZSG looks for before treating "East Africa's art market is maturing" as more than a hopeful headline.

Lisa Folawiyo Closes Lagos Fashion Week, Quietly

LAGOS — Lisa Folawiyo closed Lagos Fashion Week's 2026 edition on 1 November with "After Rain: Volume 1," an extension of her Spring/Summer 2026 collection, presented not as a runway show but as an intimate dinner at White Space, Ikoyi [4]. Reports differ on the exact format, with one describing a five-course dinner for 60 guests and another a three-course dinner with models moving among the tables [5]. Guests reportedly included Adekunle Gold, Mai Atafo and Beverly Naya [4]. The appearance marked Folawiyo's return to the Lagos Fashion Week calendar after seven years away [4].

A five-day event built around 50-plus labels and a "circular futures" theme chose to end not with a big closing runway but with a 60-person dinner. That is itself a statement about where the designer wanted attention to land: on craft and intimacy, not scale.

Banque du Caire's IPO Is 27 Times Oversubscribed

CAIRO — Trading in Banque du Caire's shares began on the Egyptian Exchange on 2 November under the ticker BQDC, after Banque Misr sold a 45 percent stake, 6.862 billion shares, in an offering worth roughly EGP 36.37 billion, about $658 million [6]. The final offer price was EGP 5.30 a share, implying a market capitalisation of about EGP 80.83 billion, and the public tranche was 27 times oversubscribed [6]. EFG Hermes, joint global coordinator alongside CI Capital as lead global coordinator, called it the largest IPO in Egyptian Exchange history in EGP terms [6].

A 27-times-oversubscribed public tranche, on an offer EFG Hermes itself is calling a market record, is a concrete demand signal for Egyptian capital markets. It lands at a moment when several other African listings this year, Airtel Money's muted London debut among them, have had decidedly mixed receptions; this one did not.

BII Brings Its Africa Strategy to Kenya

NAIROBI — British International Investment launched a Kenya-based rollout of its 2026-31 strategy on 2 November, building on $1.2 billion already committed across East Africa under its prior strategy [7]. The UK's development finance institution is targeting roughly $6.7 billion of its own capital for Africa over the period, aiming to mobilise up to a further $5.3 billion in private investment alongside it [8]. At least 40 percent of new commitments by value are earmarked for climate finance [8].

Sourcing note: coverage is inconsistent on timing. Some outlets trace the 2026-31 strategy itself to an April 2026 announcement, with this week's Kenya event functioning as a country-level rollout rather than a brand-new commitment. We are treating the Nairobi event as what BII's own release calls it, a strategy launch in Kenya, not as new capital on top of the April figures.

What to Watch Next

PARIS/NEW YORK — Sotheby's African & Oceanic Art department continues its sales in Paris (through 9 November) and New York (through 11 November). SINGAPORE — Invest Africa's Africa Infrastructure Investment Dialogue runs 17 November. LAGOS — Dangote Group has said it is raising its Africa investment target toward $50 billion, with pipeline and depot plans in East, Central and Southern Africa; we are still verifying the specifics before covering it in full. ZSG will be watching all of it.

An art auction that genuinely grew rather than merely survived, a designer who chose intimacy over spectacle to close a five-day event, a bank listing that investors fought to get into, and a development financier bringing its five-year plan to the country it is betting on: the numbers that were missing last week all point the same direction. Not every African capital or culture story this year has landed well. This week's did.
